Julie Beck is entering her fourth season as the SIU women’s basketball program’s Director of Basketball Operations in 2016-17 after being hired by head coach Cindy Stein on April 17, 2013.
Beck was previously part of the SIU women's basketball staff for 19 years, including some of the best seasons in program history. She served 17 years as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Cindy Scott from 1981 to 1998 before serving as the Salukis' head coach from 1998-2000.
In her new capacity, Beck's responsibilities will include making travel arrangements, organizing practice times, serving as a liaison with academics and marketing and assisting in alumni and community service events. In her first season in Carbondale, Beck helped begin the yearly Donate Life game to raise awareness for organ donation. She also assisted in SIU's Go Pink game efforts, which resulted in more than $4,000 being raised for Southern Illinois Healthcare's new comprehensive cancer center in southern Illinois.
Saluki women's basketball had a 333-186 overall record during its 19 years with Beck on the staff between 1981 and 2000. SIU made four trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a Sweet 16 run in 1987, won three conference titles and posted seven 20-win seasons during Beck's tenure as a Saluki assistant. Southern also won an MVC-record 39-consecutive conference games between the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons. After her coaching career, Beck spent 10 years working in marketing and group sales for Saluki Athletics.
Before coming to Carbondale, Beck got her coaching start as an assistant at the University of Missouri during the 1979-80 season after ending her playing career with the Tigers. As a player, she was a three-year letterwinner from 1975-79. During that time, Tiger squads compiled a 73-27 record, including a 26-win season and Big Eight Tournament championship her senior year. Beck earned her bachelor's degree from Mizzou in 1978.
