Swimming & Diving Teams Fall To Big 12 Power Mizzou

The Southern Illinois University men's and women's swimming and diving teams could not overcome an early point deficiet and ultimately where beaten by Big 12 powerhouse Missouri in a non-conference dual meet at the MU Natatorium in Columbia this past Saturday. The men's team were outscored, 143-98. The women's team lost to unbeaten Mizzou (4-0) 163.5-73.5.
The men's team had only two first place finishers in the individual events. Sophomore Edoardo Daelli won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.97 and senior Corne Prozesky won the 200 breastroke in 2:05.85. Prozesky added a second place finish in the 200 individual medley (1:55.63). Daelli teamed up with Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou, Matt Glowacki and Jeremiah Cortez to win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:07.48. Both Daelli and Prozesky earned a second place finish as members of the 400 medley relay team along with Danilo Luna and Adam Gangl.
Freshman Brent Menghini placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:52.69) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:44.93). Papachrysanthou had a second place showing in the 100 freestyle (47.13) and a third place in the 50 freestyle (21.56). Glowacki finished behind Papachrysanthou in the 100 freestyle to earn third (47.27). Sophomore Derek Helvey placed second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:41.78 to round out the top Saluki swimming finishers.
Divers Dave Likar and Jake Sinclair finished second and third in the 1-meter dive (266.10 and 259.65 respectively). Both divers then switched finishes in the 3-meter dive, with Sinclair placing second (261.75) and Likar third (254.70).
The women's team could only manage two first place finishes. Senior Mary Trailov won the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:27.12 and the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Sarah Lenz, Natalie Kenny, Kyria Kershner and Amber Mullins, won with a time of 3:40.80. The Saluki's other 400 freestyle relay team (Karina Belache, Ashley MacCurdy, Rachel Green and Brigitta Olson) finished second with a time of 3:40.82.
Senior Brooke Radostits had second place finishes in both the 50 freestyle (24.92) and the 200 backstroke (2:04.37). She teamed up with Kendall Forster, Olson and Courtney Corder for a third place finish in the 400 medley relay (4:00.73). Sophomore Leane Pienaar also had two second place finishes, the 1,000 freestyle (10.22:49) and a tie in the 200 butterfly (2:06.83). She then added a third place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:09.89). Senior Breanne Hay was the top Saluki diver, placing fourth in both the 1 and 3-meter dives (207.00, 206.33).
Both the women's and men's team will take some time off during the Holiday Break and will resume action after the new year Saturday January 19 in a non-conference dual meet versus Western Kentucky. Start time is 1:00 p.m. in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Notes: Pienaar's time of 2:06.83 in the 200 butterfly set a new personal best, her previous best was 2:06.87 set at this years Northwestern Invite.
