Southern Illinois University Carbondale (8-18, 1-13 in MVC) lost a strange Missouri Valley Conference match to Creighton (14-8, 8-5 in MVC) on Friday, November 3.
The Salukis were crushed in game one 15-3, came back and won game two 15-10, led game three 11-4 before losing 15-12, and lost game four 15-6 to drop their tenth straight match, including nine MVC matches in a row. The 15-10 win in game two was the first MVC game the Salukis have won since their sweep of Wichita State on September 30.
"We played well for awhile, and that's the key phrase. We're still way too inconsistent and that's been a thorn in our side. To lose the first game 15-3 and come back and win the second game...we should be able to control our play better and we still don't. You're going to have results like this if you can't control your play...you can't miss serves and you have to pass the ball and play defense," Saluki head coach Sonya Locke said.
"We won the second game and I was happy we battled back, but those are my expectations. They're not exceeding my expectations. It's hard for me to be happy, it was the first game we've won in a month and that's good because it shows the team we can win, but now that they've proven it to themselves, I just hope we can build on it. That's up to them."
Southern Illinois recorded a season high 96 digs on defense and had strong performances by seven players, including double-double performances by Megan Baumstark (56 assists, 12 digs), Kristie Kemner (17 kills, 16 digs), Qiana Nelson (13 kills, 12 digs), and Tara Cains (11 kills, 11 digs). Lindsey Schultz had a strong .435 hitting percentage (12 kills, 2 errors, 23 attempts) and Jenny Noel (7 kills, 16 digs) and Lisa Vodin (11 digs) had good nights for the Salukis.
The Salukis host Drake on Saturday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Davies Gym. Drake, eighth in the MVC, upset fourth place Evansville on Friday night in Evansville, Indiana. Additionally, Saturday's game will honor the three Saluki seniors on this year's squad.
