Lexington, Ky. -
Southern Illinois University (7-2, 1-0 in MVC play) swept the University of Kentucky (2-5) at the Conference Challenge Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. The 15-11, 15-4, 15-13 win snapped a two match losing streak.
"I told the kids if we hit 25% (SIU hit .266) we would win. We have to just worry about how well we do our job. The team that banged the most wins and they made a lot of serving errors trying to attack certain people," Saluki Head Coach Sonya Locke said. "We helped ourselves by blocking well (10 team blocks). Tara Cains and Lindsey Schultz were blocking machines."
Sophomore Kristie Kemner led SIU with 15 kills and 9 digs. Jenny Noel (12 kills, 6 digs, 4 block assists), Qiana Nelson (7 kills, 7 digs, 3 block assists), Tara Cains (9 kills, 10 digs, 5 block assists), Lindsey Schultz (4 kills, 5 block assists), and Megan Baumstark (34 assists, 6 digs) all had strong performances for the Salukis.
"The team really was excited to play a big SEC school and was fired up for the match," Locke added. "I guess it's an aura, we beat them at home back in 1986 as well."
