Fayetteville, Ark. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (8-16, 1-12 in MVC) stepped out of Missouri Valley Conference play on Monday, October 30, and was swept by Arkansas (11-11, 6-5 in SEC) of the Southeastern Conference 15-13, 15-7, 15-7. The loss is the ninth straight for the Salukis. The match was the first meeting between the two schools.
"We're inconsistent and we should not be playing that way at this point in the season. I expect us to play hard the whole match. We played strong the first game and then did something different the rest of the match and we're better than that. We could have won this match," Sonya Locke, Saluki head coach said.
The Salukis battled the Lady Razorbacks to a tough 15-13 loss in game one. Jennifer Cliff and Lisa Vodin both came off the bench to record four points off each of their serves. Down 9-5, SIU battled back to tie the game at 12-12. Trailing 14-12, the Salukis cut the Arkansas lead to 14-13 and held off four game points before losing 15-13. Jenny Noel (5 kills, 2 block assists, 1 solo block) and Kristie Kemner (5 kills, 5 digs) led SIU.
In game two, Southern Illinois jumped out to a 3-1 lead and played Arkansas close until the Salukis trailed 9-7. The Lady Razorbacks then reeled off six straight points for the 15-7 win. Jenny Noel and Kristie Kemner each had 4 kills for the Dawgs. Arkansas jumped out to an 8-1 lead and game three and the Salukis couldn't come back, losing 15-7 to lose the game and the match.
Jenny Noel led the Salukis with 13 kills, 3 digs, a solo block and 3 block assists. Kristie Kemner added 10 kills and 9 digs and Qiana Nelson added 10 kills.
The Salukis will be back at home after the three game road trip to host Creighton on Friday, November 3, at 7 p.m. and Drake on Saturday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be held in Davies Gym.
