Coming off its best spring record in 10 years last season, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's tennis team sets to open its 2001 campaign Friday-Saturday, Feb. 16-17 when the Salukis head to Louisville, Ky.
The Salukis, who posted an overall record of 16-6, 10-3 in the MVC last spring, will open play Friday against Murray State at 6 p.m., followed by a duel with Louisville on Saturday at 9 a.m.
"I think the big plus is that we have a lot of depth this year," said head coach Judy Auld. "We have some good experienced players to go along with some talented young players that I believe can combine for a successful spring season. Our main objective, however, is to steadily progress throughout the season and ultimately play the best tennis possible at the MVC Tournament."
SIU is sparked by the return of juniors Erika Ochoa and Ana Serrot. Ochoa posted a second best spring mark of 16-6 at No. 4 singles last season while Seroot won 10 wins at the No. 2 slot. In addition, both teamed up to register a second best 12-4 mark in No. 2 doubles.
Murphysboro, Ill., native in freshman Tana Trapani also looks to give the Salukis a boost at No. 3 singles after a stellar fall season where she led the team with an 11-3 record. Trapani and teammate Keri Crandall will then team up to occupy the No. 2 doubles spot.
