
Salukis end season with runner-up finish at MVC Championships

NORMAL, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team finished in second place at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships after losing in the championship match against Wichita State, 4-0. It was the second consecutive year the Salukis have been the runner-up, and the fourth time in the last five seasons. It was also the second year in a row that both the men's and women's team finished inside the top two in the conference.
Polina Dozortseva was tabbed as the Elite 18 award winner while at the championships for the second consecutive season . The award is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA competing at the finals site at each of the MVC's team championships. Southern has now earned the honor two of the seven years the award has been given.
Two members of the Saluki squad also received all-conference honors in doubles and singles. Ana Sofia Cordero and Xiwei Cai were named to the All-Conference team at No. 2 doubles and both were named to the All-Select team for their play in singles. It was the second consecutive year that Cai has been named to the All-Select team. As a duo the two Salukis went 10-2 at the No. 2 doubles position in conference play, including a 2-1 record at the MVC championships. Cordero and Cai finished the season with an overall record of 19-11, which was their second consecutive season with a winning record. In singles play both finished the season with 15 wins, playing primarily from the No. 1 or 2 spot.Â
SIU finished their season with a 13-12 record, with a 7-3 mark in MVC play. It was the sixth consecutive year the team finished with a winning record in conference and overall. The team went 7-2 at home for their 11 consecutive winning season on their home court. Since the current senior class has been on campus (2013-14), the Salukis have only lost four matches in Carbondale. The team went 36-4 in the four year span, winning 90% of their matches, giving them the best winning percentage of any team on Southern Illinois' campus in the four span.
