NORMAL, ILL. - For the second year in a row the Women's tennis team will be playing for the Missouri Valley Conference title. Southern Illinois won yesterday against Missouri State, 4-0, and then clinched a championship birth in their semifinal match with Bradley University today, winning 4-1.
The Salukis got help from the top and bottom of their lineup on their road to the finals. Meagan Monaghan won both of her matches from the No. 4 spot, including a clutch victory today to secure the win for the Salukis. She now has eight MVC wins on the season and remains undefeated in conference play. Joining Monaghan with two wins are Ana Sofia Cordero and Vitoria Beiroa. Cordero went 2-0 at the No. 2 singles spot and Beiroa won both her matches in straight sets at the No. 6 slot. Athena Chrysanthou also picked up a singles win against MSU for her seventh MVC win of the season yesterday.
In doubles to play the Salukis continued to be dominant. Both matches at the championships so far have featured a quick two wins to secure the doubles point. Xiwei Cai and Cordero, and Monaghan and Beirao, are both undefeated, going a perfect 2-0 on the weekend. Southern has now won seven doubles points in a row.
The Salukis will play for the title tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the defending champions, Wichita State. In the two teams only meeting this year the Shockers took down the Salukis, 6-3, in Carbondale. Since the loss Southern has gone, 7-2, and are riding a seven match winning streak.
