NORMAL, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team heads to Illinois State this weekend for the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference team championships. SIU has earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament after finishing 5-2 in conference play.
SIU enters this year's conference championships as last year's runner-up. The Salukis made it to the championship match and fell to later champion, Wichita State. Southern advanced to the championship match after taking down Northern Iowa and Drake, winning both matches by a margin or three or more. It was the third time in the last four years that the team had finished in second place.
QUICK SEASON RECAP
The Salukis will take a five match winning streak into the championships. Southern has not lost in over a month, going a perfect 5-0 in the month of April. In that span the Dawgs got wins over Illinois State, Bradley, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, and Drake. The team's first round matchup is against Missouri State, who is the seven seed. In the two teams only matchup this spring the Salukis beat the Bears, 6-1, in Carbondale. Â
SIU finished their spring schedule, 11-11, winning six of their last ten matches. The team had five players end the season with at least three wins in conference play. Athena Chrysanthou and Meagan Monaghan led the Salukis, both finishing with six wins on their MVC resume. Monaghan also finished the conference season undefeated.
