Carbondale, Ill. -
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale swimming and diving teams took on Missouri Valley Conference foe Evansville Saturday at the SIU Student Recreation Center pool and came away knowing that they have a good chance to sweep the championships in February.
The men's team won 151-78 while the women were equally as dominating winning 148-95. Both teams are next in action Nov. 17-19 with the men at the Northwestern Invitational in Chicago and the women traveling to Bloomington, Indiana to compete at the Indiana Invitational.
The men finished first in 11 of the 13 events with Derek Helvey, Corne Prozesky and Jake Sinclair coming in first in two events each. David Parkins, Luke Wotruba and Matt Munz won their individual events while both the 400 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay teams finishing first for the Salukis.
"I felt pretty good about the swims today," SIU men's coach Rick Walker said. "We were able to get up and get going. We had some great swims across the board, so I'm pleased. I think this effort speaks volumes. I think Evansville will regroup and come back stronger than ever. But if you want to be on top then you have to act like you are on top and you swim like you are on top. That is where we want to be and that is how we act."
The men opened the season with a narrow 11 second loss to Kansas in the 5K Open Water Swim and then destroyed defending Division II champion Drury College and swept the competition at the MVC Shootout edging defending conference champ Southwest Missouri State by one point. The Dawgs had won the MVC title the previous five seasons.
The women finished first in nine of the events with Brooke Radostits and Jenna Meckler winning two events each. Amber Mullins, Courtney Corder, Lee Frye and Meara Modlich also won their events along with the 400 medley relay team.
"Another real strong performance across the board," SIU women's coach Jeff Goelz said. "About 15 of the girls had in-season best swims and the entire team had a solid performance. I guess I could be happiest about my group of breaststrokers. Lee Frye and Melanie Williams at 2:24.5 with Susan Furkin at 2:27.4 and Mary Trailov at 2:33.6 and all those girls are two to three seconds faster than they've been all year long at that event. Just a real solid performance."
The women opened the season losing to Kansas at the open water swim and were edged by Drury by two points. SIU then won the MVC Shootout and put on a strong performance against Big Ten Illinois before the Evansville meet.
