SIU Divers Eliminated at Zone D Championships

Southern Illinois University Carbondale divers Jake Sinclair and Joel Hanger completed the competition on the 1-meter boards Friday at the Zone D Diving Championships by finishing strong but did not score high enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Sinclair, a sophomore from Gillette, Wyoming, finished ninth with a score of 256.75 on six dives. He started off strong on his first dive with a score of 46.80 gathering 6.0 marks from all the judges and finished strong on his last dive with three 6.5 marks from the five judges.
Hanger, a sophomore from Glendale, Ill., finished 12th with a score of 219.50 after stumbling on his second dive but regained his composure to finish strong on his last four dives. Hanger is the reigning 3-meter diving Missouri Valley Conference champion. Both Saluki divers will be competing on the 3-meter board Saturday.
Troy Dumais of Texas finished first with a score of 351.35 followed by Justin Dumais of Texas (345.00) to become the only two divers to qualify for the NCAA Championships on the 1-meter board scheduled for March 22-24 at College Station.
Fellow MVC diver Joe Schiermann of Southwest Missouri State finished 13th (202.65) as the only other conference diver competing on the 1-meter.
