Saluki Swimmers Lead after Day One of MVC Championships

The Southern Illinois University men's and women's swimming and diving teams lead the pack after the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The defending champion SIU women lead second place Evansville 293 to 222 while the men hold a 291-249 lead over defending champions Southwest Missouri State.
For the women, Southwest Missouri State is third with 170 points, Illinois State is fourth (152), Northern Iowa fifth (74) and Bradley sixth (26). For the men, Evansville is third (192), Northern Iowa fourth (117) and Bradley fifth (62).
Six records were broken with three Saluki individuals and one relay team setting new marks. Junior Chris Papachrysanthou broke his own record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.14 while freshmen Derek Helvey and Leane Pienaar set new standards in the 500 freestyle. Helvey swam a 4:30.04 for the men while Pienaar swam a 4:59.94 for the women. In addition, the Saluki women?s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Brooke Radostits, Jenna Meckler, Nikoleta Michaelidou and Caty Kinnaman broke the championship record with a time of 1:36.43.
Also setting new championship marks were two Evansville swimmers. Emily Tomes set a new record in the 200 IM with a swim of 2:05.97 and Kim Dodson in the 50 freestyle with 23.22.
Coming in first for the Saluki men were the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Papachrysanthou, David Parkins, Jermiah Cortez and Matt Munz along with the 400 medley relay team of Munz, Corne Prozesky, Luke Wotruba, and Papachrysanthou. In addition, Munz won the 200 IM.
The championships continue Friday and Saturday at the SIU Student Recreation Center Pool starting at 11 a.m. on Friday with the preliminaries followed by the finals starting at 6 p.m. Saturday?s action starts at 10:30 in the morning with finals slated for 5 p.m.
