Salukis Swimming Hosts First Conference Dual Meet of Season

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's swimming and diving team will face Missouri Valley Conference rival Evansville for the second time this season when it hosts the Aces 2 p.m. Saturday at the SIU Student Rec Center pool
Both the men and the women faced Evansville at the MVC Shootout Oct. 14 and bested their neighbors from Indiana. On the women's side, the Salukis and the Aces finished first and second with the Dawgs winning by 34 points, 244 to 210. On the men's side, SIU finished first with 235 points and UE finished third with 189 with MVC champ Southwest Missouri second.
"Evansville was second last year and we are expecting a challenging meet ," SIU women's coach Jeff Goelz said. "They always swim fast here and love coming to our pool."
South African freshman Leane Pienaar was impressive for the Salukis at the MVC Shootout acing the field in the 1000 freestyle by 14.78 seconds and the 500 free by 3.10 seconds. Other top Saluki performances were Dana Morrell in the 200 individual medley, Brooke Radostits in the 100 backstroke and Amy Legner in the 100 breaststroke.
The biggest margins of victory for the men at the MVC Shootout were Matt Munz's in the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM. Chris Papachrysanthou's win in the 50 freestyle and the first and second finishes by Joe Tidwell and Corne Prozesky in the 100 breaststroke were also impressive.
"I expect some pretty good swims in a couple of key areas," SIU men's coach Rick Walker said. "We have to get a feel for what their strengths are going to be and overcome those strengths so as to help us beat Southwest Missouri at championship time."
For the men, the closest races will be between the Salukis' Ben Bourne and Prozesky and the Aces' Darko Kermiciev in the 200 free, SIU's Papachrysanthou and David Parkins and UE's Dave Nel in the 50 free, SIU's Munz and Joe Tidwell and UE's Scott Hobson in the 200 IM, SIU's Luke Wotruba and Jeremiah Cortez and Kermiciev in the 100 butterfly, Papachrysanthou and Nel in the 100 free, Munz and Hobson in the 100 backstroke, and the 200 free relay was very competitive.
For the women, the hot races will be between SIU's Nicoleta Michailidou and UE's Karen Sliozis in the 200 free, SIU's Jenna Meckler and UE's Kim Dodson in the 50 free and 100 free, SIU's Morrell and Courtney Corder against UE's Emily Tomes and Joni Davidson in the 200 IM, SIU's Radostits and UE's Megan Harvey in the 100 backstroke, SIU's Legner and Davidson in the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 Medley Relay event.
