SIU Women Maintain Lead after Day Two of MVCs

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's swimming and diving team maintained its first day lead over Evansville while the race tightened between the SIU men and the Southwest Missouri State after the second day of the Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the SIU Student Recreation Center Pool Friday.
The Saluki women increased its lead over Evansville by 10 points at 633 to 552 with SMS third (389), Illinois State fourth (366), Northern Iowa fifth (189) and Bradley sixth (81).
The Saluki men held a 42 point lead after the first day and the lead has been cut in half with SIU holding a 21 point lead at 595 to 574 over the defending MVC champion Bears. Evansville holds down third place with 440 points with Northern Iowa fourth (242) and Bradley (157).
Another eight records fell Friday night with the Salukis breaking three of them. New records set by the Saluki swimmers were by freshman Derek Helvey in the 400 IM (3:58.59) and two relay teams. The men's 200 medley relay team of Matt Munz, Joe Tidwell, Luke Wotruba and David Parkins set the mark of 1:31.97 and the women's 800 freestyle relay team of Amber Mullins, Carly Hemphill, Jenna Meckler and Dana Morrell set the record of 7:39.25.
The University of Evansville set four of the five other records with wins in the women's 200 freestyle (Kim Dodson), the women's 200 medley relay, the men's 200 freestyle (Nikola Kalabic) and the men's 800 freestyle relay. Illinois State's Andrea Lovelle set a new record in the 3-meter diving with a score of 519.10.
The Saluki men also took first place in the 100 breaststroke (Joe Tidwell) and the 100 butterfly (Matt Munz). The Saluki women took first place in the 100 backstroke (Brooke Radostits) and the 400 IM (Leane Pienaar).
The MVC Championships conclude Saturday with 11 events starting with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and the finals slated for 5 p.m.
