Lawrence, Kan. -
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's swimming and diving team turned the tables on the University of Kansas Saturday and beat the Jayhawks 138-99 in a dual meet.
The Salukis were nipped by Kansas in the 5K Open Water Meet that opened the season in September and took a measure of revenge winning nine races including both diving events.
The Saluki women didn't fare so well losing to the Lady Jayhawks 135-97 with Brooke Radostits and Lee Frye the only Salukis to come home with individual wins.
Chris Papachrysanthou won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. The junior from Cryprus edged teammate David Parkins by only .09 seconds in the 50 with a time of 21.25 and beat Parkins again in the 100 by a slightly wider margin of .35 seconds with a swim of 47.19.
Other winners for the Salukis were Danila Luna in the 200 freestyle, Matt Munz in the 200 IM, Derek Helvey in the 500 freestyle, Corne Prozesky in the 200 breaststroke, Joel Hanger in the one-meter dive and Jake Sinclair in the three-meter dive. The 400 medley relay team on Munz, Prozesky, Papachrysanthou and Luke Wotruba also came in first.
For the women, Radostits was an easy winner in the 200 backstroke beating her nearest competition by 4.16 seconds with a time of 2:05.49 while Frye had a tougher outing winning the 200 breaststroke by only .14 seconds in a time of 2:25.76.
The Salukis won both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relay events to round out the SIU winners. Newcomer Karina Belache had a strong first meet coming in second in the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 200 freestyle.
Both the men and women are back in action hosting Western Kentucky Saturday at the SIU Student Recreation Center pool.
