Tennessee Tech University used an 11-4 run in the last two minutes of the game to slip past Southern Illinois University 81-74, Wednesday at SIU Arena.
The win marked the fourth consecutive win over the Salukis as the overall series now stands 8-6 in favor of the Golden Eaglettes.
Senior Terica Hathaway scored 15 of the Salukis' first 23 points of the game connecting on 7-of-11 from the field. The 15 points added to a total of 38 SIU points in the opening stanza as the Dawgs headed into the locker room down by two, 40-38.
Tennessee Tech then dug in defensively and smothered Hathaway in the second half allowing her to score just two points. With Hathaway not scoring and the Salukis taking shots they didn't want, it was then when the Golden Eaglettes found a way to get the job done.
After two free throws by Kristine Abramowski put the Salukis ahead 70-68, Golden Eaglette center Janet Holt answered with two free throws of her own to knot the score at 70-70 with 2:59 to play which ignited the TTU run.
Following Holt's two freebees, the Golden Eaglettes went to the line on four occasions. Misty Garrett (3), Allison Clark (2), and Holt (1) accounted for six of the 11 points as TTU's clutch free throw shooting down the stretch proved to be the difference in the 81-74 win.
Holt, last year's Ohio Valley Conference Player-of-the-Year, led the Golden Eaglettes with 26 points shooting 9-of-22 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Garrett, Rachael Gobble, and Allison Clark also scored double figures to pace TTU. Garrett had 19 points while Gobble and Clark each chipped in 10.
Despite her two-point drought in the second half, Hathaway still managed to lead the Dawgs in scoring with 17 points. Molly McDowell also added 16 (5-of-10) and Lynn Morancie chipped in 12 (4-of-6) to lead SIU.
SIU, now 1-2 on the season, will return to action Fri.-Sat., Dec. 1-2, when the Salukis travel to Dallas, Texas, to compete in the SMU Hoops for Cure Women's Basketball Classic. The Salukis will open tourney play against tournament host SIU Friday at 7 p.m.
