Junior forward Lenae Williams knocked down five three-pointers while scoring 19 points to lead DePaul University to a 74-57 win over Southern Illinois University Carbondale Wednesday at SIU Arena.
Williams connected on 7-of-17 from the field and 5-of-12 from downtown as her five treys moved her to within just 12 of DePaul's all-time record.
The Salukis had a difficult time finding the basket in the first half as they hit the bottom of the net on just eight occasions in 27 attempts. DePaul, however, who didn't shoot much better, connected on just 13-of-33 shots, but found a way to execute in the process. The Blue Demons built a 17-point lead (32-15) while the Salukis went into a scoring nightmare failing to score for 5:48. By the time the drought was over after a made free throw by Angela Tolbert with 2:05 left, the half came to a suttle close with DePaul leading comfortably 36-21.
SIU's zone defense proved to be no match for DePaul's Williams and Candis Blankson in the second half as both combined for nine three-pointers. Williams (13) and Blankson (10) paired up to score 23 points in the second stanza which enabled the Blue Demons to build their biggest lead at 49-30 with 15:15 to go. The Dawgs then caught life and pulled to within seven (51-44) at the 10:59 mark, but the Blue Demons kept their poise and rallied to a 23-13 run to end the game by a final count of 74-57.
With the win, DePaul improves to 2-3 on the season while the Salukis fall to 2-3 dropping their last four of five contests. SIU, who was out-rebounded 49-29 while being held to just one offensive rebound, was led by freshman Angela Tolbert who scored 17 points. Tolbert hit 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out one assist. Terica Hathaway then followed with 12 points as her streak of scoring in double figures every game this season still stands.
SIU will have a couple days to regroup before returning to action Saturday, Dec. 9, when the Salukis travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on the University of Missouri at 7 p.m.
