Good teams always seem to have the ability to hit the shots needed most and that is precisely what the University of Northern Iowa displayed in its 83-74 Missouri Valley Conference victory over Southern Illinois University Monday at SIU Arena.
With the win, the visiting Panthers moved to 9-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in league play as they stand atop the Valley. The win also marked the seventh consecutive time in the last three years UNI has defeated SIU.
After going scoreless for the first 4:52 to open the second half, Southern Illinois managed to overcome a 15-point deficit (54-39) and pull to within six, 58-52, with 6:42 left to play. While the Salukis thought they shifted the momentum, Northern Iowa kept its poise and calmly buried five straight field goals (two of which were three-pointers) and eight consecutive free throws down the stretch as the Panthers clawed to the 83-74 win.
Kary Dawson led all UNI scorers with 18 points while Abbi Schutte added 16 and Jill Seidl chipped in 12. Dawson canned nine points including two three-pointers during that run in which the Panthers did not miss a shot for 5:25.
Six players posted double figures for the Salukis led by Terica Hathaway's 16 points. Freshman Angela Tolbert followed with 14 while Danielle Lawary added 13 to round out the top three. Kristine Abramowski also had 11 points while Molly McDowell chipped in 10 and Holly Teague posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
SIU, now 4-8, 1-2 on the season, will continue its homestand Thursday, January 11, when the Salukis play host to 15th-ranked Southwest Missouri State. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m., at SIU Arena.
