Junior Jennifer Kaczka (28) and freshman Angela Buckner (26) combined for 54 points to lead Wichita State University to a 89-83 win over Southern Illinois University Saturday in Missouri Valley Conference action at SIU Arena.
Kaczka's 28 was a career-high while Buckner's 26 tied a career-high as the Shockers took their fourth straight in the overall series.
Trailing the Salukis by three, 35-32, with 3:50 left in the first half, WSU used an 11-2 run to its advantage as Kaczka hit three consecutive jumpers in 1:30 to give the Shockers a 43-37 lead at the break.
SIU, who never led again after that, then came to within four points (75-71) on a pair of free throws by Molly McDowell with 4:53 to play, but that was as close as the Dawgs would get as Wichita State ran off with the 89-83 win.
Fouls took control of the game as both teams combined for 54 hacks resulting in 65 free throw attempts. Wichita State was 25-of-32 from the line while Southern Illinois connected on 28-of-33 freebees. Both teams also shot well from the field as the Shockers 48 percent showing overpowered the Dawgs' 47 percent contribution.
McDowell scored a career-high 29 points on 6-of-13 from the field and 17-of-19 from the free throw line to lead the Salukis. In the last two games, McDowell has scored a combined 57 points to post back-to-back career highs. Terica Hathaway also had 14 while Holly Teague added 13 to help pace SIU.
Southern Illinois, now 4-10, 1-4, on the season, will return to action January 18 when the Dawgs head to Omaha, Neb., to visit Creighton. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
