The Southwest Missouri State Lady Bears tennis team rode into town with only five players and came away with a relatively easy 4-3 win over Southern Illinois University Sunday at the University Courts.
The Saluki could only manage wins by freshman phenom Tana Trapani at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles with fellow freshman Alejandra Blanco to go with default wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The Salukis are now 6-6 for the season and drop to 2-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference and will host Indiana State Friday and both Illinois State and Bradley Saturday for their final home matches of the season.
Trapani upped her season record to 19-4 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Laura Alvarez of SMS and then teamed with Blanco to up their record to 9-1 after beating the team of Amy Newman and Oyuki Cruz, 8-3. Blanco lost a tough three -setter to Cruz at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2
"This weekend was good in that we had a good win over Wichita Saturday, but it was a disappointing loss to Southwest," said SIU coach Judy Auld. "They just played harder than we did. We are not getting the point production from everyone in our lineup. All our players need to put themselves on the line to come together as a team for the remainder of the season."
