SIU Women's Tennis Enters MVC Championships as Fifth Seed

Seeded fifth, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's tennis team will participate in the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship to be held this weekend (April 27-29), in Des Moines, Iowa.
Illinois State (18-5, 9-0) has been selected by the conference coaches to finish first at this year's event, tallying eight first place votes while Northern Iowa is picked to finish second after receiving seven second-place votes.
Drake, Southwest Missouri State and Southern Illinois battled throughout the regular season and finished with an identical 6-3 conference mark, finishing three through five in the coaches poll.
The Salukis, who are 10-8 overall and 6-3 in league play, are led by freshman Tana Trapani who is a near-perfect 14-1 at No. 4 singles. Trapani, the reigning MVC Player of the Week, is also 12-2 with teammate Alejandra Blanco in No. 2 doubles. In addition, the Murphysboro, Ill., native is an impressive 25-4 overall in singles play this season.
