SIU Men Fall To MVC Rival SMS 60-53

Sprinfield, Ill. - The SIU swim teams warmed up for the upcoming MVC Meet with mixed results on Saturday. The women beat conference rival SMS 62-51 and Louisiana-Monroe 93-20 in the double-dual meet, while the men lost to defending MVC champion SMS 60-53 after a close loss in the final event (400 free relay) by .11. SIU did beat the ULM men 98-12 to split the dual meets.
The Saluki women were paced by first place finishes by Leanne Pienaar in the 1000 free (10:37.81) and 500 free (5:10.38), Karina Belache in the 200 free (1:57.86) and 200 butterfly (2:10.81), Brooke Radostits in the 50 free (24.72) and 200 backstroke (2:04.13), and the top 400 relay team (3:58.49). The wins improve the women to 5-1 in dual meets.
The SIU men were led by top finishes by Edoardo Daelli in the 200 free (1:41.52), Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou in the 50 free (21.08), newcomer Marcello Possato in the 200 backstroke (1:52.14), Corne Prozesky in the 200 breastroke (2:06.02) and the top 400 relay team (3:28.72). The SIU men are now 3-2 in dual meets.
Both teams will have almost four weeks to prepare for the MVC Championships on February 21-23 at the Student Rec Center.
