Terre Haute, Ind. - Coach Sonya Locke collected her 200th career coaching win as Southern Illinois defeated Indiana State in four games Saturday night 30-27, 30-26, 21-30, 30-26. SIU moves its record to 16-7 for the year, and is 7-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
"It's nice, but I'd like to get 200 at SIU," said Locke of her milestone.
Seniors Lindsey Schultz (MB, Valparaiso, Ind., Wheeler HS) and Qiana Nelson (OH, Kankakee, Ill., Kankakee HS) led the Salukis with 23 and 14 kills, respectively. Schultz was .474 accurate, and Nelson posted a .300 hitting percentage. Setter Britten Follett (junior, Marengo, Ill., Marengo HS) dished out 55 assists, and hit .455 with five kills. Kristie Kemner (senior, OH, Quincy, Ill., Quincy Notre Dame HS) added 11 kills.
Nelson led the defense with a strong showing of 19 of SIU's 70 digs. Lisa Ciucci (junior, Portage, Mich., Portage Northern HS) recorded 10. Indiana State was credited with 56 digs.
"Qiana made a huge difference defensively for us tonight," said Locke.
The Sycamore's Kylee Osborn was tough for the Salukis to handle. She put down 23 kills and had 13 digs. Indiana State had 14.5 blocks to SIU's 8.
Southern Illinois will host Creighton and Drake this weekend.
