St. Louis, Mo. - Southern Illinois University sophomore transfers Suzanne Souders and Andrea Johnson were named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week respectively on Monday, October 9.
Souders, a transfer from Minnesota, found out she was eligible to swim on the afternoon of Friday, September 27 and went out and won the 100 backstroke in 59.01 that evening in SIU's season-opening meet against top 25 power Kansas. She also swam the lead leg for the top SIU 200 Medley Relay team that finished third. An Olympic Trials qualifier in 2000 in the 100 back as a high school senior, Souders has a career-best time of 57.13 and was ranked 13th in the nation in 2000. She is a native of Belleville, Ill.
Andrea Johnson, a transfer from Northern Iowa, finished third in the 1-Meter dive in her first SIU meet against Kansas on Friday. Johnson led all SIU divers with 178.28 points in her first outing as a Saluki. Johnson holds the UNI diving record for the 1-Meter board at 274.10 and was an honorable mention all-MVC selection for the 2001-02 season. She is a native of Elburn, Ill.
SIU's next meet will be on October 26 at the Fall Illini Classic at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. The SIU men and women will compete in the event which includes Illinois, Michigan State and Missouri.
