Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University women's swimming and diving head coach Jeff Goelz announced that Rachel Winius signed a letter of intent on Thursday, November 14. The early signing period runs from November 13-20.
"Rachel's a solid kid, who's a nice 100 and 200 fly and 400 IM swimmer. She has a lot of ability and the potential to improve. She's long and lean and when she gets in the college environment with weight training and more intense practices, she'll be a very good athlete. We expect her to come in and contribute immediately. We are focusing on recruiting people who will have an immediate impact and Rachel Winius is one of those people," Goelz added.
Winius, a 5'7 native of Brookfield, Wisconsin, won her conference championship in the 100 fly this fall and has been a part of a conference championship team all four years at Brookfield Central High School. She will swim the 100 and 200 fly and the 400 IM for the Salukis and has career-bests of 59.50, 2:09.60 and 4:45.02 respectively in those events.
The SIU women's swimming and diving team has won the last five Missouri Valley Conference titles and seven of the eight MVC titles contested. Goelz, who began the season with just two seniors, has one scholarship available and will add another athlete later in the school year.
