Saluki Swimmers Lead After Day One Of MVC Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki men's and women's swimming and diving teams lead after day one of the Missouri Valley Championships. Unofficially the men's team leads second place Southwest Missouri State 308-274.5, followed by Evansville (191.50), Northern Iowa (104) and Bradley (78.5). The women's team lead Evansville 238-210, with Southwest Missouri State (191.50), Illinois State (173.50), Northern Iowa (120) and Bradley (67).
Senior Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou won his fourth straight MVC crown in the 50 freestyle with a season's best time of 20.23, as well as anchoring the championship 400 medley relay team with fellow teammates Marcelo Possato, Corne Prozesky, Adam Gangl. Their time of 3:19.71 set a new conference record in the 400 medley relay, breaking the previous record of 3:20.80 set by SIU during the 2000 conference meet. Papachrysanthou also added a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:22.17) with teammates Matt Glowacki, Jeremiah Cortez, and Cameron Cook.
Freshman Brent Menghini placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:26.78) as the Salukis swept second through sixth place and gained valuable points in their lead over the Bears. Junior Jake Sinclair placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 308.40 just behind SMS diver John Waldon (308.45). Devin Aikins (273.80), Dave Likar (273.05), and Adam Peper (266.60) placed third through fifth.
Defending women's 500 freestyle champion, Leane Pienaar won the 500 with a time 5:02.29. Amber Mullins placed third in the 500 with her time of 5:04.97. Senior Brooke Radostits had second place finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.96) and as the lead leg of the 400 medley relay team (3:52.69) with teammates Amy Legner, Brigitta Olson and Jenna Meckler. Senior Mary Trailov added a third place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:08.58).
