Baseball Splits With Northern Iowa Sunday

Waterloo, Iowa - Ryan Murray's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of game two helped Southern Illinois University (25-17, 12-12 MVC) split a doubleheader with the University of Northern Iowa (20-20, 8-16 MVC) for the second time in three days on Sunday at Waterloo Riverfront Stadium. SIU lost game one 17-6 in just seven innings due to the ten-run rule and won game two 6-5.
"I would have liked to win another game or two this weekend, but I'm glad we are leaving with a split against Northern Iowa," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach.
In game two, trailing 1-0 after one inning, SIU scored three runs on three hits to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Justin Maurath singled and moved to third on a single by Sal Frisella. Maurath stole home on a double steal as Frisella advance to second. Greg Andrews followed with a two-run home run, his fifth of the year, to give SIU the two-run lead. The Salukis added a run in the fifth inning on Cory Newman's sacrifice fly for a 4-1 advantage.
UNI added a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-2. The Salukis responded in the top of the eighth inning with a run on a walk and error by the rightfielder allowing P.J. Finigan to score for a 5-2 advantage.
The Panthers battled back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4. In the top of the ninth inning, SIU added the winning run on Ryan Murray's sacrifice fly, scoring Luke Nelson for a 6-4 SIU lead. The Panthers scored once in the ninth before SIU reliever Eric Haberer forced a groundout with two on for the final out and his third save.
SIU's Josh Joiner (2-1) picked up the win. He allowed one earned run, two total runs and eight hits in six and 1/3 innings. Haberer pitched two and 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs for the save.
Greg Andrews (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Ryan Murray (1-for-3, RBI) led SIU in the win. Trailing 1-0 In game one, SIU took the lead with consecutive sacrifice flies in the second and third innings by Sal Frisella and Ross Kowzan respectively to take a 2-1 lead, its only lead of the game.
UNI responded with four runs in their half of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. The panthers outscored SIU 12-4 the next four innings to beat the Salukis 17-6 in seven innings due to the 10-run rule. Adam Boeve hit two home runs with three RBI and five runs to lead the Panthers.
SIU's Luke Nelson (4-4) allowed seven runs on eight hits to get the loss. UNI's Chris Rosselot (4-2) allowed five runs in four and a third innings, but still picked up the win.
Toby Barnett (2-for-4, run), Ryan Murray (1-for-2, run), Justin Maurath (1-for-3, run) and Cory Newman (1-for-3, run) led the Salukis.
SIU will host Murray State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Abe Martin Field and then travels to Champaign to face Illinois on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
