St. Louis, Mo. - Southern Illinois University's Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou, a senior swimmer on the 2002 MVC Men's Championship team, was recently selected to receive the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Male Postgraduate Scholarship Award by MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin.
Papachrysanthou, SIU's school record holder in the men's 50 meter freestyle and the 2002 MVC champion in the event, will receive a $5000.00 for graduate work at the institution of his choice in the next 18 months.
He is a three-time All-MVC Scholar-Athlete, earning academic honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002, in addition to having the MVC Championships record of 20.14 in the 50 meter freestyle. Papachrysanthou won the 50 meter freestyle all four years at SIU and was the 100 meter freestyle champion in 2000, the year he represented Cyprus in the 2000 Olympics. He was all-MVC in the 50, 100 and 200 meter freestyle and the 200 and 400 medley relays during his stellar four-year career.
Papachrysanthou follows former swimmer David Parkins, who was awarded the MVC Postgraduate Scholarship in 2001. The award is the highest academic honor a student-athlete can earn from the Missouri Valley Conference.
