Carbondale, Ill. - Junior Brigitta Olson and newcomers Suzanne Souders and Liz McGowan each won an event, but it wasn't enough for the Southern Illinois University women's swimming and diving team to open the 2002-03 season with a win. The Salukis fell 119-80 to Kansas University on Friday, September 27 at the Student Rec Center Pool.
"This was a pretty good meet for us. A lot of the young kids and transfers stepped up and competed and showed us that we made the right decision by recruiting them. Even though Kansas is a top 25 team our kids competed and showed a lot of potential. I'm excited about this year and the future of this team," said Goelz, head women's swimming and diving coach.
Olson, the MVC 200 butterfly champion, won the 100 butterfly in 59.62. McGowan, a freshman competing in her first college race, won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.21. Souders, a sophomore transfer, found out today she was eligible and went out and won the 100 backstroke in 59.01 and swam the lead leg for the third-place 200 medley relay finish.
"I'm real excited about Suzanne. She just found out today that she could swim and she went out and won the 100 back. That's great after all the hard work she's been doing and not knowing if she could swimmers. Liz and Brigitta swam well and Andrea Johnson and the divers performed well also," added Goelz.
SIU picked up second place finishes from Andri Hadjiantoniou in the 100 back (59.73) and the 200 free relay team of Bronwyn Logan, Megan Simms, Kelsey Kinsella and McGowan. The Salukis received third place finishes from Amber Mullins (200 Free), Simms (50 Free), Andrea Johnson (1-Meter Diving), Kinsella (100 Free), Briley Bergen (500 Free) and Amy Legner (100 Breast).
The same two teams will compete in a unique 5K open water swim on Saturday at 8 a.m. at Little Grassy Lake at Camp One on the northern edge of Giant City State Park in Makanda, Ill.
SIU's next meet will be on October 26 at the Fall Illini Classic at the University of Illinois in Champaign.
