Ivan Sanchez Wins Men's 5K Maroon & White Swim

Makanda, Ill. - In the men's Maroon & White 5K swim, Senior Ivan Sanchez won the 5K in 42.04 seconds to win the intrasquad meet. He was followed by freshman Jason Sigler of Carterville (42.26), Brent Menghini (42.28), Derek Helvey (42.55), Joe Neukirch (44.51) and freshman Christian Tinajero.
"This was a pretty good intersquad meet this weekend. Ivan had a pretty good swim to win today. Jason Sigler swam well and he continues to impress me. Brent and Derek did well and it was Brent's first open water swim. This gets the guys out of the pool and it's pure swimming," added Rick Walker, head men's swimming and diving coach.
SIU's next meet will be on October 26 at the Fall Illini Classic at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Both men and women will compete in the event which includes Illinois, Michigan State and Missouri.
