LINCOLN, Neb. - Sophomore Briley Bergen's season best in the 1000-yard freestyle wasn't enough to push the women's swimming and diving team past Nebraska as the Salukis lost 144-91 Saturday morning.
Bergen grabbed fourth in the 1000-yard freestyle, posting a mark of 10:27.89, besting her time from last week by more than a second. She is just seven seconds away from the Missouri Valley record set by former Saluki Leanne Pienaar in 2001. Bergen also place fifth in the 500-yard freestyle.
Senior Brigitta Olson was second (4:35.58) in the 400-yard individual medley and placed third in the 200-yard fly with a season best time of 2:09.18. Junior Ashley MacCurdy grabbed second (2:09.48) and third (4:37.37), respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard individual medley, setting season bests in both events.
In the 1-meter dive, junior Nadine Shawah (206.55), sophomore Melissa Hanson (176.47) and freshman Nikki Duhigg (163.50) placed first, second and third for the Salukis.
Overall, 28 new season best times were set against the Huskers this weekend. SIU will return to action next weekend when the Salukis face off against Illinois and Iowa State in Champaign, Ill. at 1 p.m. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
