CARBONDALE, Ill. - The women's swimming and diving team is looking to mix things up a little this weekend when SIU matches up against Illinois and Iowa State on the road.
The tri-meet with Illinois and Iowa State, held in Champaign, Ill., will be a 16 event order meet that will allow the Salukis to swim in more events (four each), as well as participate in some events they would not normally be a part of.
"We're going to move some people around, flip-flop them a little bit. These meets are kind of the prize for training," head coach Jeff Goelz says. "These kids train hard all week, then the meet is their chance to show what they've learned and how far they've come. So hopefully we see some good step-up performances."
The Salukis sit atop the Missouri Valley Conference best list in eight of 20 events at this point in the season, but Goelz, hinting at last season's second-place finish, says it's too soon to get excited about a championship.
"It's early in the season," Goelz said. "If anything we learned from last year when we were all over the best list, then at the end we didn't prove that we deserved to be on that best list, in those particular spots in a lot of cases. So it's a little early to get excited. Confidence is a good thing, but overconfidence is not."
The tri-meet will be held at the IMPE Building Pool in Champaign, Ill. The event is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. All results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com or www.FightingIllini.com.
