CARBONDALE, Ill. - The women's swimming and diving team hopes to grab a victory this weekend when it hosts Drury after losing the last two meets.
Last season, SIU pulled out the victory against Drury, but only by 23 points. This time around, the Salukis hope to solidify the meet early with big performances from the distance swimmers and the divers.
The women's team boasts two of the fastest 500 and 1000-yard freestyle swimmers in the Missouri Valley Conference this season in sophomores Briley Bergen and Elizabeth McGowan. Both Bergen and McGowan have been named as the MVC Swimmer-of-the-Week because of their performances this season, and they will be relied on heavily to score big points for SIU.
The diving well for SIU is home to JUCO diving champion Nadine Shawah, who is among the league leaders in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Also a big factor for the Salukis will be 2003 conference runner-up in the 1-meter dive, Andrea Johnson. Head coach Jeff Goelz will look for his squad to gain an edge in the diving events.
The home dual meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. this Saturday and will be held at the SIU Student Rec. Center pool. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
