CARBONDALE, Ill. - The men's swimming team hopes to continue its winning ways as it heads to the Purdue Invitational this weekend.
With three wins under their belt this season, the Salukis believe they have a chance to show their talent. Head coach Rick Walker says the team must focus in order to pull out a victory.
"It's really anybody's ballgame, we're just hoping we can get in the mix," Walker said. "It's one of those things where if you get too tunnel-vision, you're not going to see the bigger picture."
The three-day meet gives SIU the opportunity to swim more, and at the same time a chance for its fourth victory of the season.
"Over three days, points are coming and going, and there are too many events to think about winning too earlier," Walker said. "At the end of each day, you can say, 'Okay, we had a good day.' To say you just won the whole thing after one day with two days to go isn't going to happen."
Other teams competing at the invitational include Northwestern, Ohio State, Iowa, Wyoming, Buffalo and host Purdue. A good showing against such high level teams would confirm the talent the Salukis have meshed together on this season's team.
"We're just going to go take care of our business. Hopefully, that's going to put us right in the middle of what going on there," Walker said.
The invitational is scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 21, and end Sunday, Nov. 23. The meet will be run in sessions. Each day there will be two sessions; the preliminaries are from 12-2 p.m. each day, and the finals from 7-9 p.m. On Sunday, finals run from 5-7 p.m. All times are approximate.
