CARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki swimmer Nora Bunford was named Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer-of-the-Week, the league office announce Wednesday.
Bunford, a freshman from Budapest, Hungary, competed in three events at the Northwestern Invite in Evanston, Ill., last weekend and set Valley best times in all three events.
Her mark of 1:04.56 in the 100-yard breaststroke, in which she captured first place, was just .09 seconds off the MVC record set in 1999.
Her time of 2:19.93 in the 200-yard breaststroke, in which she placed third in the event, came within 1.68 seconds from breaking the MVC record in that event, which was also set in 1999.
Bunford also swam in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:08.11 for a fourth-place finish. That time was a career-best for Bunford.
This is the first time Bunford has received the conference award, and she is the third SIU swimmer to be honored. Along with Bunford, sophomores Briley Bergen and Elizabeth McGowan (honored twice) also received the Swimmer-of-the-Week honor, comprising four of the six weeks this season.
