McGowan Named MVC Swimmer-of-the-Week

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Sophomore Elizabeth McGowan was named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer-of-the-Week, the league announced Tuesday.

A native of Carrollton, Texas, McGowan filled the gap left by fellow sophomore Briley Bergen's absence as she swam to a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle last weekend in a tri-meet against Illinois and Iowa State.

McGowan's time of 10:23.50 puts her atop the Valley standings for the event, just ahead of Bergen by five seconds. The time is also only three seconds shy of the conference record set by former Saluki Leanne Pienaar in 2001.

A fourth-place finish and a time of 5:10.15 in the 500-yard freestyle helped put McGowan second for SIU this season and third on the Valley best list in that event.

McGowan is the second Saluki swimmer to receive the athlete of the week honor as Bergen was named by the league two weeks ago.
