Terre Haute, Ind. - Southern Illinois (6-16, 2-11) turned the ball over 31 times in a 92-53 loss to first-place Indiana State (18-5, 11-3) earlier tonight at the Hulman Center.
It was nearly deja vu for SIU, who turned the ball over a season-high 32 times in both teams' first meeting earlier in the year. As for league-leading ISU, the win marked its seventh straight over the Salukis.
SIU did not score a field goal for the first 5:06 of the game, as ISU built a 20-8 run early in the first half. Turning the ball over five times in the first 9:51 of the game, the Salukis struggled to stop the vicious
Sycamore attack which saw Lisa Verhoff and Melanie Boeglin score five points apiece.
The Sycamores, who never trailed in the game, went on to take a commanding 38-24 lead at the break.
Boeglin and Kourtney Mennen, who were each held to eight or less points in the first half, scored double-figures in the game's final 20 minutes to blow the game wide open.
Mennen pitched in 14 second half points, while Boeglin added 13. Additionally, the duo combined for 13-of-29 field goals and 10-of-13 free throws in the 92-53 pounding.
Erin Rhodes rounded out the Sycamores' scoring with 14 points off the bench.
SIU was led by Tiffany Crutcher who posted a double-double 14 points, 10 rebounds. She was followed by Molly McDowell who scored 11 points. Berwanger also finished with 12 rebounds, marking the third time in her last four games, she has registered double-figures in boards.
