Carbondale, Ill. - The women's tennis team didn't expect its early exit from the Missouri Valley Conference Championship tournament on Friday. SIU came into the tournament with a 5-4 conference record and the fifth seed, but would fall to the #4 seed, Drake, 1-4.
The championship, held in Springfield, Mo., was slowed due to rain and moved indoors, which hindered many teams from playing doubles matches. SIU was only able to get one win from the Bulldogs, as freshman Zoya Honarmand defeated Marie Mainil, 6-3, 6-1. The win was Honarmand's ninth win this year.
The Salukis saw drastic improvement from last year when they did not even attend the championship because the team only had three healthy players. Head coach Judy Auld believes this year could be a building block for an even better season next year. SIU will return its entire lineup, including the recent come back of junior Tana Trapani, and the possibility of bringing back injured sophomore Kari Stark.
SIU finishes the season with a 8-15 record overall, and 5-5 in conference play.
