Carbondale, Ill. - Senior outfielder Ross Kowzan was one of 11 players selected to the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District V Baseball Team, announced this week. Positionally, the team consists of two pitchers, a catcher, four infielders, three outfielders and a designated hitter.
A native of nearby DuQuoin, Ill., Kowzan carries a 3.51 GPA in Biological Science. Making 43 of 44 starts for the Salukis this season, he hits .282 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs, 17 runs scored and 22 RBI. Additionally, he hit a grand slam against Centenary (2/16) as part of his two round-trippers this year.
"Typically you see college athletes rewarded for their efforts on the field, so it's nice to see an athlete honored for his efforts in the classroom," said SIU head coach Dan Callahan. "In my eyes, Ross Kowzan truly exemplifies what we coaches look for in a student-athlete."
Three players represent the state of Illinois on this year's Academic All-District V Team, including Kowzan (OF, Southern Illinois), Andy Schutzenhofer (INF, Illinois) and Troy Shelby (OF, Western Illinois). District V Baseball Sports Information Directors participated in the voting.
