DES MOINES, IOWA - Southern Illinois University was held to a season-low .066 hitting percentage and was swept by Drake 3-0 on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. SIU had just nine more kills than errors (40 kills, 31 errors, 136 attempts) in the match. The Bulldogs (8-5, 1-1 MVC) won game one easily before the Salukis (2-9, 0-2 MVC) battled back to make the final two games close in the 30-20, 33-31, 30-27 loss.
"Our passing wasn't consistent tonight. Drake played great defense even though we had more digs than they did (53 to 49) and they had more blocks than us (10 to 4). We wanted to get our middle blockers going tonight and Marissa (Washington) stepped up, but we didn't get anything out of our outside hitters. We did get great defense from Kelly Katricka (16 digs) at libero, who was playing for the first time this season. These were two tough losses," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach.
Sophomore middle blocker Marissa Washington tied a career-high with 10 kills and hit .308 (10 kills, 2 errors. 26 attempts) to lead the Salukis. Freshman setter Holly Marita added 29 assists, five digs and four kills without an error in eight attempts (.500 hitting percentage). Katricka, a junior college transfer playing in her first match this season and as a Saluki, led the SIU defense with 16 digs in place of junior libero Erica Miller, who was sick and couldn't play tonight.
Drake's Stacy Boerma and Eve Johnson led the Bulldogs with 14 kills each, while DU hit .195 as a team and outblocked the Salukis.
SIU will be back on the court and on the road Tuesday to face Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo. at 7 p.m.
