BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The women's swimming and diving team lost its third dual meet since returning from the holiday break Saturday against regional rival Western Kentucky by a score of 131-107.
Despite the loss, the Salukis showed hints of the winning attitude that has brought multiple conference championships to SIU in past seasons - one of those hints was Andrea Johnson.
Johnson, a senior diver, grabbed first place in the 1-meter dive with a score of 216.98. She finished as the runner-up in the 3-meter dive, posting a mark of 227.93, which is a season best.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Briley Bergen swam a time of 10:35.82 to finish second, followed by junior Natalie Kenny (10:54.73) and senior Kiria Kershner (11:38.85) in fifth and sixth place.
The day was also good for the Salukis in the 200-meter events as sophomore Kelsey Kinsella finished second in the freestyle with a time of 1:56.35, while freshman Rachel Winius posted a mark of 2:08.88 in the butterfly on her way to a second-place finish.
Freshman Nora Bunford finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.50), as well as winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:23.49.
SIU began the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay (4:02.64) and ended the night going one-two in the 400-yard freestyle relay with times of 3:41.96 and 3:46.66.
The Salukis will return to action next weekend as they match-up with Southwest Missouri State on Jan. 24. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
