Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The men's swimming and diving team snagged its fourth victory of the season Saturday against regional rival Western Kentucky by a score of 138.5-104.5 behind eight individual wins and one relay victory.
Junior Ivan Sanchez started off the meet with win in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 9:32.97, improving his season best by nearly nine seconds.
Sophomore Jason Sigler followed Sanchez in third place with a time of 9:47.27.
SIU would win two more straight events as senior Derek Helvey was victorious in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:41.97, while sophomore Mitch Richards won the 50-yard free in 21.59.
Helvey was followed in the 200 free at second-place by fellow senior Edoardo Daelli (1:42.07), then would later win the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:38.50.
Adam Peper, a senior diver, won the 1-meter dive with a score of 247.20, while freshman Ben Palacios set a personal season best with a mark of 239.70. Peper would also win the 3-meter dive with a mark of 235.05.
Daelli would redeem himself by winning the 100-yard freestyle in 46.89 - one of the fastest times of the season. Senior Matt Glowacki posted a time of 47.47 in the same event to receive runner-up honors.
Grabbing the eighth win of the night, junior Marcelo Possato was not to be outdone as his time of 1:49.53 led him to first place. Richards finished fourth in 1:55.36.
SIU finished the day with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, posting a season best time of 3:07.48.
The Salukis will return to action next weekend as they match-up with Southwest Missouri State on Jan. 24. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
