CARBONDALE, Ill. - Fresh off a ten-day training session to Puerto Rico, both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams will compete against Big Ten powerhouses Indiana and Ohio State this weekend.
The tri-meet, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, will be held at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind. The competition is the first for the Salukis in more than a month.
The men's squad has posted three straight wins and a fourth-place finish at the Purdue Invitational so far this season. The Salukis boast 16 swimmers and three relay teams in the CollegeSwimming.com top times of the season listing, including three (Derek Helvey, Marcelo Possato and Ivan Sanchez) in the 500-yard freestyle and three (Helvey, Sanchez and Jason Sigler) in the 1650-yard freestyle.
The women's team has a record of 2-3 this season with a third-place finish at the Northwestern Invite, but has notched four Missouri Valley Conference Athlete-of-the-Week awards. Sophomores Elizabeth McGowan and Briley Bergen, as well as freshman Nora Bunford, will return to action looking to pass some records this season - an accomplishment McGowan has already reached once this season in the 1000-yard freestyle, breaking the MVC record with a time of 10:18.71.
