CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's swimming and diving team fell to Nebraska 132-84 in the Salukis' (1-1) second meet of the season. 2004 NCAA national qualifier Lauren Bailey swept three events to lead Nebraska.
For the Salukis, sophomore Nora Bunford won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:20.22 and senior Rachel Green (24.99) took second in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Kelsey Kinsella (53.69) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and senior Ashley MacCurdy (2:08.92) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke.
Senior divers Andrea Johnson (236.02) and Nadine Shawah (220.80) took second and third in the one-meter dive. Shawah (217.65) also finished third in the three-meter dive.
"I know the score reflects a loss, but as I watched that meet there wasn't a single race we were completely out of," said head coach Rick Walker. "We were on the wrong end of a bunch of really close races, but we were in there and we made them close and that's what we ultimately wanted to do."
The women's team will have two weeks off before joining the men for a dual meet in Columbia, Mo., Nov. 6 to compete against Missouri.
"Missouri is going to be equally as tough (as Nebraska)," said Walker. "We're very fortunate to be able to compete against them, and if we can go in and compete as we did today, then we will have accomplished our goal."
