MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin (2-0) pulled down 51 rebounds and scored 33 second chance points en route to a 82-53 win over Southern Illinois (0-3) earlier tonight in front of 5,487 fans at the Kohl Center. The Badgers out-rebounded the Salukis, 51-17, including a 29-7 mark on the offensive glass.
The loss marked SIU's 10th straight to a Big Ten opponent. It also marked the Salukis' 12th in a row since last beating Bradley on Jan. 31, 2004.
UW took control of the glass in the first half, where it out-muscled SIU to a 25-10 rebounding advantage.
The Badgers collected 13 boards on the offensive end, which helped produce 12 second chance points.
Aided by the strong effort inside, UW managed to build a 15-point lead in the game's opening 11:52.
Holding a slight 10-8 lead with 13:59 remaining, UW used three, 3-pointers to build a 17-4 run over the next 5:51. Three different Badgers, including Jolene Anderson (13:14), Janese Banks (9:49) and Ashley Josephson (8:08) joined forces for the sudden ambush.
Trailing 27-12 after the run, the Salukis started to make a comeback with the help of eight straight points from Daphney Desamours.
Desamours' spree built some momentum for the Dawgs, who later cut UW's lead to 11 (36-25) when Elyse Morris pitched in a layup with just under three minutes left.
The Badgers, however, caused a turnover and countered with a Shari Welton jumper and later took 41-29 lead into the locker room.
Nine of UW's 11 players scored at least two points in a balanced first half scoring attack, while Ebba Gebisa, Danielle Ward and Jordan Wilson combined for a dominating 15 boards.
SIU struggled to protect the ball early in the second half, where it turned the ball over seven times in the first 6:40.
UW, in turn, opened with a 14-0 run during that stretch, and the Dawgs never recovered.
Three layups, a jumper and a pair of three-pointers sparked the rally which gave the Badgers a commanding 55-29 lead at the 13:49 mark.
The Badgers, who continued to pound the boards, built their biggest lead of the game to 31 (82-51) when Gebisa knocked down a jumper with 1:17 on the clock.
Gebisa's points were the last two UW scored to ice the 82-53 win.
Anderson led four Badgers who scored double-digits with 17 points. Stephanie Rich (13), Wilson (12) and Ward (11) followed.
All of UW's players contributed at least one rebound to the final total of 51 boards.
Danette Jones and Desamours each scored 16 points to lead the Salukis. For Desamours, the double-digit outing marked her third of the season.
Jones also had three, 3-pointers which upped her career total to 95 three-pointers made, as she ranks fifth all-time at SIU in that category.
SIU returns to Carbondale for a three-game homestand beginning Nov. 28 against Tennessee Tech.
