COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Southern Illinois men and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Missouri Saturday at the MU Natatorium. The Saluki women scored 76 points to the Tigers' 167, while the men were defeated, 148-95. Both teams combined to win eight individual titles.
On the men's side, junior Jason Sigler and freshman Antonio Santoro won two events each. Sigler won the 500-freestyle (4:39.34) and the 1000-freestyle (9:35.26), while Santoro won the 200-freestyle (1:42.30) and the 200-butterfly (1:52.46). Freshman Gareth McGee won the 200-backstroke in a time of 1:49.59.
"It was a good meet overall," said head coach Rick Walker. "We had some great races from the freshmen men, but if you don't win relays, you can't win the meet. We also missed our top diver (Brandon Birchak), who is out with an injury right now."
The Saluki women were led by junior Briley Bergen who took top honors in two events, the 500-freestyle (5:07.97) and the 1000-freestyle (10:26.34). Sophomore Nora Bunford won the 100-breaststroke (1:05.30).
"We had some good races out of the women," said Walker. "We saw a lot of positive things. Missouri is a tough team and they have a lot of depth."
Both teams travel to Springfield, Mo., Nov. 13 to take on Division II powerhouse Drury.
