Women's Basketball Loses to SMS, 89-35
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- League-leading Southwest Missouri State (23-2, 14-1) held Southern Illinois (3-20, 2-12) to under 20 points in both the first and second halves en route to a 89-35 win earlier tonight in front of a crowd of 7,536 at Hammons Student Center.
SMS, who extended its homecourt winning streak to 18 games, led SIU, 51-17, at the half, before handing the Salukis their worst loss in school history. The 54-point deficit surpassed SIU's 49-point loss to Vanderbilt (94-45) on Nov. 27, 1994.
SIU, who shot just 26 percent (13-of-50) from the field, turned the ball over 28 times and was out-rebounded, 41-27. Additionally, not one Saluki reached double figures in points, as Danette Jones had a team-high nine points. Katie Berwanger also had 11 rebounds.
Meanwhile, SMS was led by Stephanie Busbey's 23 points. Kari Koch (13) and Jenni Lingor (12) also scored double figures, as all but two Lady Bears scored in the game.
The Lady Bears shot 56 percent (34-of-61) from the field, including a 15-of-29 (.517) mark in the second half.
SIU returns home to host Bradley on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7:05 p.m.
