HONOLULU, Hawaii - Hawaii's Melissa Coogan threw a one-hitter to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 1-0 win over the Salukis (12-6) in an elimination game at the Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament on Sunday. SIU finished the tournament in third place with a 3-4 record.
"I was disappointed in the loss to Hawaii. We pitched well again, but didn't get the hits to win," said Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
Coogan (5-9) had a no-hitter until Jenny Doehring singled in the seventh inning. She allowed just Doehring's hit without a walk to earn the win.
Hawaii (15-12) broke the scoreless tie with the lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Stacey Ritter doubled to open the inning. Pinch runner Tara Harbert moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Marie Jackson for the 1-0 margin.
SIU's Alison Thompson (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing three hits and one run without a walk in five innings. She struck out two in her first outing in two weeks. Amy Harre threw two innings of hitless, scoreless relief with a strikeout.
The Salukis will face Hawaii on Tuesday, March 9 in a single game at 9 p.m.
