WICHITA, KAN. - The women's tennis team was defeated in a very hard fought match today by the No. 4 seeded Drake Bulldogs in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
The match started at 11 a.m. but due to thunderstorms had to be moved indoors and play would not continue till 4 p.m. Senior Alejandra Blanco was edged out in a three-set match at the No. 1 singles spot by Drake's Annalie de Bryun (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) while Blanco's sister Maria Blanco was defeated at the No. 2 spot. SIU picked up three wins at the No. 3-4 and 6 singles spot, forcing the doubles point to be the deciding factor of the match.
The Saluki senior duo of Tana Trapani and Alejandra Blanco once again gave the Salukis a win at the No. 2 doubles but unfortunately the Dawgs No. 1 doubles team, of senior Jessica Knitter and sophomore Maria Blanco, was defeated 8-3, as were sophomores Zoya Honarmand and Zuzana Palovic, who dropped their No. 3 doubles match 8-3 to DU's Cheen Alkhatib and Eve Rusidanto.
The Salukis finish out the year with an 11-12 overall record and a 6-6 mark in MVC play.
