CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois held Indiana State to a .010 hitting percentage on the night as the Salukis swept the Sycamores, 3-0, in Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday in Davies Gym.
SIU, 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the MVC this season, recorded a season-high 14 service aces and hit .337 on the night to extend a 17-game Indiana State (0-16, 0-6) losing streak, 30-14, 30-17, 30-14.
"I felt like we did very well and went out aggressive," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "At Western Illinois we slipped in the third game and let them come back, but we really did a good job all night long of doing the little things and playing together as a team so I'm really pleased."
Johannah Yutzy led the Salukis for the fourth-consecutive game with double-digit kills. The junior led all hitters with 10, adding two digs and a block assist. Fellow middle blocker Marissa Washington hit .429 with seven kills, also posting two solo blocks and three block assists.
Leading all hitters in percentage, Jene' Pulliam hit .700 with a perfect seven kills on 10 attempts and no errors.
Kristy Elswick led the Saluki defense with 14 digs, while Haley Hann posted nine, along with four kills, four assists and a career-best four service aces. Setter Holly Marita tallied 24 assists and seven digs.
"We try to play together," Winkeler said. "And I told them in between games two and three that (team play) is what's most important. It was a collaborative effort and we had a lot of team support."
Up next, the Salukis take the road Oct. 7-8 when they travel to Missouri State and Wichita State, the third and fourth-ranked teams in the Valley.
